Justice Department Seeks Approval to Release Epstein–Maxwell Investigation Records

The Justice Department is requesting judicial approval to publicly release a wide range of evidence collected during the federal investigations into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. The move is aimed at complying with the newly enacted Epstein Files Transparency Act, which requires certain case materials to be made public.

In a letter to the judge overseeing Maxwell’s case, prosecutors asked the court to lift a protective order that has long prevented the release of documents that were shared with Maxwell’s defense team ahead of her 2021 trial. Those materials include search warrants, financial and travel records, flight lists, police reports, depositions from civil cases, records from Epstein’s estate, and notes from interviews with third parties, including victims.

The Justice Department said it is also asking judges in both the Epstein and Maxwell cases to authorize the release of relevant grand jury transcripts. Prosecutors emphasized that any documents made public would be redacted to protect the identities of survivors.

Officials say they have received concerns from lawyers representing multiple victims about how certain documents originating from Congress were obtained and released, and they are reviewing those claims while moving ahead with their transparency obligations.

Maxwell was convicted in December 2021 after a four-week trial on charges related to recruiting underage girls who were later abused by Epstein. Testimony included accounts from four women who detailed how Maxwell facilitated their contact with Epstein when they were minors. Jurors also heard from Epstein’s former pilot and saw photographs, video, flight logs, financial transactions, and other evidence gathered during searches of Epstein’s properties.

Some of those materials surfaced publicly during Maxwell’s trial, and Congress has released additional documents in recent weeks. It remains unclear how much new information will be included once the Justice Department completes its review and the files are released.
