Pet Cancer Awareness Month: Local Lifesaving Care Helps Coachella Valley Pets Fight Cancer
November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to educating pet parents about early detection and lifesaving care. Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in both dogs and cats, but when symptoms are caught early, many pets can live longer, healthier lives.
Here in the Coachella Valley, Animal Samaritans offers something unique for local families. They operate the only veterinary oncology program in the region, allowing pets to receive advanced cancer care close to home rather than traveling outside the desert for treatment.
One recent patient, a beloved dog named Casey, is a powerful reminder of why timely care matters. Her family noticed unusual lumps and sought medical evaluation. After a biopsy revealed sarcoma, their veterinarian recommended oncology care. While wait times at clinics out of state stretched months into the future, Casey was able to be seen by Dr. Baldanza at Animal Samaritans within two weeks.
Following a thorough review of her case, the medical team determined that amputation offered the best chance of survival by preventing the cancer from spreading. The procedure was performed at Animal Samaritans, and post-surgery results revealed clear borders. Casey is now cancer-free and back home thriving.
Animal Samaritans’ Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Rick Klomhau, says it’s important for pet owners to watch for signs such as firm or growing lumps, swollen lymph nodes, changes in appetite, or unusual fatigue. Regular veterinary checkups and screenings can lead to earlier diagnoses, more options, and better outcomes.
Animal Samaritans continues to invest in specialized equipment, expert staff, and compassionate care to ensure more pets like Casey have access to lifesaving treatment right here in the valley.
