Unemployment Claims Drop Again as Labor Market Stays Slow but Steady
The so-called low-hire, low-fire labor market continues to show stability. For the third week in a row, first-time claims for unemployment benefits have fallen. New data from the U.S. Labor Department shows filings dropped by 6,000 to about 216,000 — the lowest level since April.
Economists say the numbers point to an economy where companies are not conducting widespread layoffs. However, despite fewer workers filing initial claims, many Americans who recently lost jobs are finding it more difficult to land new ones, signaling slower hiring across multiple industries.
Weekly jobless reports are frequently revised, but they offer a real-time snapshot of how the labor market is performing. Claims filed by federal employees are tracked separately and are not included in this latest total.
Analysts describe the current environment as steady but sluggish — fewer pink slips, but also fewer help-wanted signs.
