Tips to Keep Thanksgiving Diabetes-Friendly Without Missing the Holiday Fun
Thanksgiving is a time filled with family gatherings, delicious dinners, and tempting treats. But for the millions of Americans living with diabetes, navigating the holiday table can be a challenge.
Dr. Willa Choi with the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center says the key is planning ahead and adopting a mindset focused on staying healthy before the celebration even begins. She recommends working with a nutritionist to build a support system at home. Anyone involved in preparing meals should also join those conversations so they understand how to cook with diabetes-friendly choices in mind.
To help reduce temptation, Choi suggests avoiding high-carb snacks and sweets in the house or the homes you’ll be visiting. She says family members play a huge role in supporting loved ones, especially when traditional holiday dishes can make it easier to overindulge.
Choi also encourages exploring healthy recipes online that modify traditional foods, such as using sugar substitutes or lower-carb ingredients. The goal is to enjoy familiar flavors in a way that better supports blood sugar control.
However, she reminds patients not to deprive themselves completely. Allowing a small treat can help avoid feeling frustrated or left out during the holiday.
“Let yourself indulge, but just a little,” she says. “It’s okay to taste a few of these things.”
With smart choices and support, people living with diabetes can enjoy the Thanksgiving feast while keeping their health on track.
