Black Friday Fun: Hashtag Holiday Calendar Celebrates Food, Space, and Steely Dan
It’s Black Friday, which means deals, leftovers, and a packed studio table for today’s Hashtag Holiday Calendar and Pop Quiz — brought to you by One Coachella Valley. The team kicked off the morning acknowledging two unofficial staples: National Leftovers Day and National Sinky Day. That’s the holiday where you skip the dishes and eat straight over the sink — truly a post-Thanksgiving classic.
Today is also National French Toast Day, celebrating the delicious combination of eggs, milk, and bread fried to perfection. And for those who enjoy a little science with their holidays, it’s Red Planet Day, marking NASA’s launch of Mariner 4 on November 28, 1964 — the mission that captured the first close-up images of Mars.
Of course, the biggest theme of the day is Black Friday itself. The team shared a quick history lesson: the name reflects retailers’ big post-Thanksgiving profits — shifting their books from “in the red” to “in the black.”
Then came the Pop Quiz. With the rock hit “Black Friday” playing in the background, viewers and anchors were asked which jazz-rock band released the album Katy Lied in 1975, featuring the singles “Bad Sneakers” and “Black Friday.” The options: Ambrosia, Moody Blues, or Steely Dan.
The correct answer — and the studio winner: Steely Dan.
