The rapid expansion of data centers fueling artificial intelligence has stirred tension among U.S. states — as communities weigh the benefits of tech investments against rising utility bills and strain on shared power grids.

Leaders in states such as New Jersey and Virginia have publicly sparred over the growth of data centers in their regions.
