Local Marines Welcomed Into Coachella Valley Homes for Thanksgiving Tradition
Thanksgiving in the Coachella Valley meant more than turkey and football for a group of young service members. Local Marines were invited to spend the day with welcoming families as part of the 18th annual Adopt-A-Marine Thanksgiving celebration at Toscana Country Club in Indian Wells. Busloads of Marines, many still in their teens and far from home, were met with cheers, gratitude, and a full holiday meal.
Among them were Aiden Lester and Cutter Franks, bunkmates who signed up for the program after hearing how much Marines before them enjoyed the experience. They spent the day relaxing, watching football, and, for a brief moment, simply getting to be themselves.
Both said the event gave them a chance to step out of their uniforms and into a family setting for the holiday. Lester joked that it was his first time in a country club, while Franks shared how meaningful it was to hear his own name, not just his last. They said other Marines would understand the importance of that small but personal moment.
The Haro family adopted Lester and Franks this year. Larry and Andy Haro have been part of this tradition for more than a decade, calling it one of the most meaningful parts of their holiday. They say the Marines’ appreciation for a warm meal and friendly company is returned by their own gratitude for the Marines’ service. Even their grandchildren look forward to hosting Marines every year and consider it a highlight of the season.
This program connects local families with service members who might otherwise spend the holiday on base. It continues to grow as more people in the community open their homes and their hearts to show thanks for those who serve.
