Survey Finds Loneliness Rising Among U.S. Adults, Impacting Mental and Physical Health

A growing sense of loneliness is becoming a defining part of life for many Americans. A recent nationwide survey conducted by the American Psychological Association reveals that more than half of U.S. adults feel isolated, left out, or lacking companionship. Researchers say that emotional disconnect has intensified over the past year.

According to the Stress on America survey, nearly seven in ten adults reported needing more emotional support than they actually received. Experts believe divisions in society, including political conflict and cultural disagreements, are contributing to a deeper feeling of separation. Those who feel overwhelmed by national divides are more likely to isolate, cancel social plans, and experience increased tension at home.

Loneliness is more than a mental burden — it can also take a toll on physical health. The survey links chronic feelings of disconnection with higher rates of depression, anxiety, fatigue, headaches, and other stress-related conditions. Health professionals warn that a lack of personal connection can reduce quality of life and create long-term health challenges.

The report encourages Americans to reach out to friends, family, and community resources when support is needed, especially during the holiday season when isolation can feel more prominent.
