Bustling DC retail district in shock after shooting of National Guard members

A bustling section of downtown Washington, D.C., just blocks from the White House, is struggling to regain a sense of normalcy following a shooting that left one National Guard member dead and another critically injured near the Farragut West Metro Station.

Local business owners say the violence unfolded in seconds but left a lasting impact. Fasil Regassa, who manages a nearby convenience store with his wife, said he rushed customers to safety and locked his doors after hearing gunfire. He later learned that one of the victims, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, who often came into his store, had died from her injuries. He described her and other Guard members stationed in the area as kind and respectful.

Rosa Fuentes, who manages a café less than a block away, also locked her doors as panicked people ran past her storefront. She tearfully reflected on the tragedy, saying she immediately thought of the victim’s family. Other managers in the neighborhood shared similar stories of fear and uncertainty, saying they quickly moved customers away from windows and sheltered in place until police secured the scene.

Many who work in the popular retail and dining corridor say the National Guard presence in recent months brought a heightened sense of safety and reduced petty crime. But some worry their visibility also increases the risk of targeted violence in such a crowded area.

By Friday, a small memorial near the Metro entrance had grown into an emotional display of flowers, flags and handwritten messages honoring the soldiers. Workers, passersby and service members paused to pay their respects.

Businesses in the district are now experiencing fewer customers, especially during lunch and evening rushes. Some employees say they feel nervous returning to work and are watching updates closely.

As the investigation continues, those who witnessed the chaos say they are just hoping for peace and healing in a neighborhood still shaken by the sudden loss of life.
