Palm Springs Open serves up competition and compassion to support AAP Food Samaritans
The season of giving continues in the Coachella Valley — this time from the tennis court. Players from more than 17 countries are in town this weekend for the Palm Springs Open, where competition meets compassion to support a local organization making a critical impact.
Nearly 280 tennis players are swinging, laughing and giving back as they participate in the charity tournament, benefiting AAP Food Samaritans. The nonprofit provides nutritional support and food vouchers to low-income individuals living with HIV and AIDS, helping hundreds of local residents each year.
For 24 years, tournament director Nabil Najjar has helped lead the effort. He says the event remains centered on fun, friendship and a shared mission to give back. Najjar adds that the organization’s lean operation means donations directly help those in need, with the majority of funds going toward client support rather than administration.
Many athletes say this tournament is about more than just tennis. Jeremiah Wade and Zachary Wright traveled from Los Angeles to compete, sharing that they’re grateful for a welcoming environment that celebrates inclusion in the sport they love. They say leagues like this help create safe spaces and opportunities for more people to participate.
The Palm Springs Open isn’t limited to a single location. Matches are being played across several premier venues in the valley, including Sunrise Country Club and additional world-class courts, expanding the event’s reach and community participation. Organizers say they’re proud to showcase the Coachella Valley’s strong support for philanthropic causes while welcoming visitors from across the globe.
This year’s competition features a set tournament format, wrapping up with finals on Sunday. But for the players, volunteers and supporters involved, the true victory is the impact being made beyond the baseline — helping neighbors in need live healthier and more secure lives.
