Trump says ‘good chance’ for deal to end Ukraine war after US-Ukraine talks in Florida
US President Donald Trump said there is a “good chance” of reaching a deal to end Russia’s war in Ukraine after top U.S. officials met with a Ukrainian delegation in Miami on Sunday. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters the negotiations are “going along well,” signaling renewed hope for a diplomatic breakthrough.
The meeting included U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Rubio described the session as productive but warned that progress remains fragile, with Russia playing a critical role in any agreement. He emphasized that negotiators are working not only toward ending the fighting but also ensuring Ukraine’s long-term economic stability.
Witkoff is expected to travel to Moscow on Monday for discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a U.S. official. Rubio noted the U.S. has maintained communication with Russian officials and believes it has a solid understanding of their expectations.
Ukraine’s lead representative, National Security and Defense Council head Rustem Umerov, called the talks “successful” and said the U.S. was “super supportive.” Umerov took over negotiations after the resignation of Ukrainian presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak amid a corruption scandal.
Ukraine continues to demand security guarantees and a ceasefire based on current battle lines, rejecting any territorial concessions beyond areas already occupied by Russia. Putin, meanwhile, insists Ukrainian forces must withdraw from what Moscow claims as its territory.
European allies previously raised concerns about an early version of the peace framework, crafted by Witkoff and Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, calling it too favorable to Russia. A revised proposal has now been shared with the Kremlin for review.
As diplomacy unfolds, the war’s violence persists. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia launched nearly 1,400 attack drones and more than 60 missiles in the past week targeting cities and infrastructure. Ukraine has responded with strikes on Russian energy and defense targets, including maritime drone attacks on two oil tankers in the Black Sea.
Ukraine’s former military chief, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, wrote Sunday that while Ukrainians seek complete victory, a long-term negotiated end cannot be ruled out.
