Airbus Flags New Quality Problem on A320 Jets Amid Ongoing Safety Fixes

Airbus says it has found a new issue affecting a limited number of metal panels used in its popular A320 passenger jets. The discovery comes just days after the company announced a separate technical concern that forced airlines worldwide to perform urgent software updates.

The latest issue is tied to a supplier manufacturing problem that impacts select panels installed on A320-series aircraft. Airbus says the source of the defect has been identified and contained, noting all newly produced panels now meet required safety standards. The company expects only a small number of planes currently in service will require additional attention, though aircraft are being inspected as a precaution.

The announcement follows fresh scrutiny over flight-control vulnerabilities caused by intense solar radiation, including solar flares. Airbus recently warned that extreme bursts of solar energy could corrupt critical onboard data, potentially causing pilots to lose control.

That concern was underscored in late October when JetBlue Flight 1230, an A320 traveling from Cancun to Newark, suddenly dropped altitude mid-flight. The jet diverted to Tampa for an emergency landing, sending about 15 passengers to the hospital.

As a result, roughly 6,000 single-aisle Airbus aircraft required immediate modifications. The company says the vast majority have now received the necessary updates, with fewer than 100 upgrades still underway.

Airbus stock slipped after reports of the new inspections, continuing a multi-day decline. Even so, the company emphasizes that safety remains the top focus — and that both issues are being addressed swiftly with airlines worldwide.
