Palm Springs Breaks Ground on First AIDS Memorial on World AIDS Day

Today is World AIDS Day, and in Palm Springs, the day took on an especially meaningful tone as city leaders, advocates, survivors, and residents gathered to break ground on the city’s first AIDS memorial. The ceremony was held at Downtown Park, where the Palm Springs AIDS Memorial Task Force led a moving tribute to those lost to HIV and AIDS while recognizing the thousands living with the condition today.

The memorial, many years in the making, carries deep significance for the community. Palm Springs has a unique and personal connection to the history of the AIDS pandemic, with many residents having been directly impacted. Dan Spencer, a member of the Palm Springs AIDS Memorial Task Force, expressed how important it is to finally see the project become reality, calling it a place for reflection, remembrance, and continued support for those living with HIV.

Acclaimed artist Philip K. Smith, who designed the memorial, also delivered remarks. His latest approved design incorporates changes inspired by community feedback after earlier concepts were viewed as too abstract. A scale model is now on display at the site, giving residents a clear vision of how the installation will transform the space.

The timing of the groundbreaking comes as some express disappointment over the federal government’s decision not to fund World AIDS Day events this year. Local advocates say this makes the memorial’s progress even more meaningful — a visible symbol of care, remembrance, and resilience.

More personal stories and community reactions are expected later this evening as the conversation continues across the Coachella Valley.
