World AIDS Day honored in Palm Springs with quilt displays, community remembrance and new memorial
Today marks World AIDS Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of the HIV pandemic, recognizing progress in treatment and prevention, and honoring those whose lives have been lost. Several community organizations in Palm Springs joined together to commemorate the day through reflection, remembrance, and education.
The Mizell Center hosted a community gathering earlier today in partnership with Eisenhower Health and Heart Palm Springs. The event included remarks from Dr. Jorge Rodriguez, Eisenhower Health’s Medical Director for HIV Services, who emphasized continued support for individuals living with HIV. Attendees also viewed panels from both local and national sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, a powerful tribute that began in 1988 to honor those lost to HIV and AIDS. Organizers say the quilt stands as a reminder of grief, resilience, and the ongoing fight to end stigma.
DAP Health is also marking World AIDS Day with a weekend of community events in Palm Springs, including a vigil and another opportunity to see historic quilt panels. The organization notes that its work is rooted in the AIDS crisis more than 40 years ago, formed by community members responding to urgent healthcare needs. Leaders say treatment has advanced and stigma has eased, but new infections still occur daily, underscoring the importance of continued testing, awareness, and care.
A major milestone in remembrance efforts was also reached today as shovels broke ground on the future Palm Springs AIDS Memorial. Community leaders, advocates, and survivors gathered for the ceremony, describing the moment as both emotional and hopeful. The memorial’s artist, whose final design was shaped by listening to local stories, created three tall pools of tears representing the themes forever remembered, forever loved, and forever celebrated.
The memorial is expected to open in spring 2026 at its downtown location. Once completed, visitors will also be able to scan a QR code to access an online portal offering history, resources, and support services.
