Indio City Council Weighs Monthly FOIA Request for ICE Detention Data
The Indio City Council will vote tonight on whether to submit a formal Freedom of Information Act request to the Department of Homeland Security, seeking new transparency surrounding local residents detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The proposal, introduced by Councilmember Oscar Ortiz, would give the city access to general data on Indio residents taken into custody this year, including their immigration status, where they are being held, and the length of their detention.
Recent ICE activity in the Coachella Valley has heightened fear among residents, with multiple community members reporting difficulties finding out where detained individuals have been taken. Advocates from the Todec Legal Center support the city’s proposed request, emphasizing that only non-identifying data would be shared. They say the information could also shed light on potential mistreatment within detention centers and help illustrate the broader impact immigration enforcement has on local communities.
If approved, city officials expect DHS to respond within a few weeks. Ortiz hopes to turn the request into a monthly effort, each requiring council approval, to maintain consistent transparency for families seeking answers. NBC Palm Springs will provide updates following tonight’s vote.
