Appeals Court Allows National Guard Troops to Remain in Washington, DC – For Now

National Guard troops deployed to Washington, DC will remain in place for the time being, after a federal appeals court temporarily froze a lower court decision that would have required their removal.

The DC Circuit Court of Appeals issued the order Thursday, saying the pause is needed to allow time to review whether the ruling should be blocked indefinitely. The move keeps in place a previous 21-day delay ordered by US District Judge Jia Cobb, who ruled last month that President Donald Trump and the Defense Department must withdraw troops from the city.

In its brief order, the appeals court emphasized that the decision does not signal how the judges may ultimately rule.

Several thousand National Guard members have been stationed in DC, including personnel from Republican-led states. Their presence has been under renewed scrutiny after a shooting last week that left one guard member dead and another critically injured.

City officials argue the deployment is placing additional pressure on local police resources, as officers have had to escort and coordinate with the troops for safety.

Meanwhile, similar legal challenges over Trump’s deployment of National Guard forces in Democratic-led cities across the country continue to move through the federal court system. The US Supreme Court is currently weighing an emergency appeal involving troops sent to Chicago.
