CDC Panel Weighs Change To Hepatitis B Vaccine Guidance For Newborns

A group of independent vaccine experts advising the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reviewing the current nationwide recommendation that all babies receive the hepatitis B vaccine at birth.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is hearing new data on hepatitis B infection rates and vaccine safety before a vote on whether to change guidance for newborns.

Hepatitis B is a highly infectious virus that can lead to severe liver complications. While many adults with acute infections recover, infants face a far greater risk of chronic disease. According to the CDC, up to 90 percent of babies who contract hepatitis B go on to develop lifelong medical issues, including liver cancer, organ failure, and cirrhosis.

The virus spreads through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids. It is easily transmitted during childbirth and can also be passed through everyday care if an infected family member is present. Experts emphasize that many parents may not know they are carriers, making universal newborn vaccination a critical safety net.

Since universal hepatitis B vaccination at birth began in 1991, yearly infection numbers in U.S. children have dropped dramatically from roughly 18,000 cases to around 20.

Health officials say the vaccine is proven safe, with only mild, short-term reactions documented such as low-grade fever or temporary soreness. Studies also show strong long-term immunity for most people vaccinated as infants.

Doctors caution that rolling back birth-dose vaccination could leave babies vulnerable during the earliest and most critical period of exposure risk. Maternal screening for hepatitis B during pregnancy helps, but it does not catch every infection.

For now, the CDC continues to recommend that all infants get their first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine before leaving the hospital.
