Desert-Friendly Plant of the Month: Red Yucca Shines in December

NBC Palm Springs’ Water Wise Wednesday, brought to you by the Coachella Valley Water District, puts the spotlight on another desert-friendly favorite. This month, Communications Manager Lorraine Garcia joins us to introduce December’s featured plant: the red yucca.

While commonly mistaken for a flowering yucca, Garcia explains that the red yucca is actually part of the agave family, making it a hardy succulent. Its long, sword-like leaves grow in clumps, and during the warm months, it sends up tall stalks lined with bell-shaped flowers. The blooms are not only eye-catching — they’re also a magnet for hummingbirds, which love their nectar.

Garcia says the red yucca is a standout performer in desert landscapes because it thrives in full sun, tolerates extreme heat, and requires little water once established. It also provides a pop of color through late summer, making it a favorite among homeowners looking for beauty and sustainability.

Residents can find red yucca and other drought-tolerant options at local nurseries. For more information on conservation, landscaping tips, and desert-friendly plants, the Coachella Valley Water District encourages the community to visit cvwd.org/conservation.
