Supreme Court Allows Texas to Use New Congressional Map for Midterms
The U.S. Supreme Court has issued a ruling allowing Texas to use its newly drawn congressional map for the 2026 midterm elections. The decision temporarily blocks a lower court’s finding that the map was likely unconstitutional due to racial considerations.
This map is expected to give Republicans an advantage in several key districts and strengthen President Donald Trump’s effort to maintain control of the House during the remainder of his term. The ruling comes just days before Texas’ candidate filing deadline on Monday.
In its brief order, the Supreme Court said the lower court failed to presume legislative good faith and improperly intervened during an active primary process. The country’s highest court has previously indicated that election rules should not be altered close to voting deadlines under what is known as the Purcell principle.
Three liberal justices dissented. Justice Elena Kagan argued the decision undermines voters who were reassigned to districts on the basis of race, writing that the court should not have overturned factual findings from the lower court.
Texas officials praised the ruling. Attorney General Ken Paxton called the map a major win for conservatives, while Governor Greg Abbott said it reflects the state’s political direction. Democrats and civil rights groups voiced concern that minority communities will have weaker representation in Congress.
Issues around this Texas map are expected to continue in the courts as multiple state and federal challenges move forward. The ruling also adds momentum to similar redistricting disputes in other states, which could shape the national balance of political power in the next election cycle.
