Trump Brings On New Architect for Expanding White House Ballroom Project
President Donald Trump has appointed a new architect to help lead his controversial White House ballroom project. The decision comes amid reported disagreements over the expanding scope and size of the design.
According to CNN, Shalom Baranes Associates — a Washington, D.C.-based architectural firm — has joined the project as the lead designer. The firm has been involved in major federal buildings across the nation’s capital, including the General Services Administration headquarters.
McCrery Architects, led by CEO James McCrery, was originally contracted for the project. Several sources say disagreements emerged over the direction of the design, but White House officials insist McCrery has not been removed and will continue as a consultant.
Plans for the ballroom — which has involved the demolition of the White House East Wing — have grown significantly since first announced. The initial design called for a 90,000-square-foot event space that could seat 650 guests at a cost of $200 million. President Trump has since indicated the price tag has risen to about $300 million, signaling a larger structure than originally planned.
The administration says the ballroom will be funded entirely by private donors and is being promoted as one of the most significant additions to the White House since the Oval Office.
The National Capital Planning Commission, which oversees federal buildings, is expected to receive the latest construction plans this month for review. Preservationists have raised concerns about the demolition of the historic East Wing and the lack of prior approval from federal oversight authorities.
