Coachella Valley Farmers Give Back with Annual Produce and Toy Drive Supporting Deputies

Coachella Valley farmers came together today for their annual produce and toy drive in Thermal, strengthening a partnership built on respect and shared responsibility. The event is organized by Growing Coachella Valley farmers and honors Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies who spend every day protecting local agriculture.

The courtyard of the Thermal Sheriff’s Station transformed into a community celebration as farmers unloaded trucks full of locally grown fruits and vegetables for deputies to take home to their families. Toys were also collected as part of a countywide holiday drive, ensuring local children receive gifts this season.

Deputies say the generosity means more than what’s inside the boxes. The agricultural unit works year-round to combat rising theft of farm equipment, irrigation pipes, copper wire, fuel, and even crops. In the past year alone, one farm reported the theft of 20,000 pounds of mangoes and another lost 10,000 pounds of lemons. Farmers say when crops disappear, their livelihood and the entire community feel the impact through increased prices and financial strain.

The Sheriff’s Department has created a five-member agricultural team dedicated to protecting farming operations throughout the East Valley. By building strong communication with growers, deputies are solving cases faster and identifying trends that help prevent future theft.

Farmers say they feel supported by a unit that listens to even the smallest reports, turning details into patterns — and patterns into results. Today’s drive is their way of saying thank you.
