Frank Gehry, one of the most influential architects of the modern era, has died at the age of 96, according to Gehry Partners. He passed away at his home in Santa Monica following a brief respiratory illness.

Born in Toronto, Canada, Gehry later studied architecture at the University of Southern California and urban planning at Harvard before opening his Los Angeles practice in 1962. His distinctive design style drew creative inspiration from unconventional sources, including the shape and motion of fish, Japanese temples and even electric guitars.

His own renovated Santa Monica home, built using raw and utilitarian materials like metal siding and chain-link fencing, earned attention in the 1970s and helped launch his career. In 1989, he received the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize, cementing his reputation on the global stage.

Gehry’s most celebrated work is widely considered the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Completed in the late 1990s, its sweeping titanium exterior and sculptural form redefined possibilities in architectural design, captivating critics and audiences worldwide.

His portfolio grew to include landmark projects such as the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle, the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris and the world-famous Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. In 2016, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Despite his fame, Gehry often rejected the idea of celebrity in his field. Known for his straightforward and sometimes cantankerous personality, he once stated he disliked being labeled a “starchitect,” even as his work brought unprecedented artistic expression to public spaces.

Gehry is remembered for transforming city skylines and challenging traditional architectural norms, leaving a legacy that will continue to shape the art form for generations.
