Indio Police Report Major Efficiency Boost After Launching New AI Call Taker
The Indio Police Department is seeing major results after rolling out its new artificial intelligence call-taking system, known as Harmony. Introduced during the busy Fourth of July weekend—when the department typically fields more than 400 calls—Harmony has helped reduce non-emergency call volume for dispatchers by roughly 50% during busy weekends. Officials say that drop has made a significant impact on keeping 911 lines open for true emergencies.
According to dispatch supervisors, Harmony handles routine calls by routing information directly into the department’s computer-aided dispatch system. The technology has also offered relief to trainees who are still learning the complex dispatch process, allowing them to focus on critical tasks without being overwhelmed by high call volumes. However, not all residents are welcoming the change. Some have shared concerns online, calling the use of AI in a public safety setting unsettling or inappropriate.
The department acknowledges the skepticism but stresses that public safety remains its top priority. Staff members monitor Harmony’s activity around the clock, and if a call escalates or requires human judgment, the system automatically transfers the caller to a live dispatcher. Looking ahead, Indio Police plan to adopt an upgraded AI platform that will enable dispatchers to speak to callers in multiple languages, expanding accessibility for the community.
