Local Farmers Thank Sheriff’s Deputies With Annual Produce and Toy Drop-Off

A local farming group is giving thanks to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department today for their ongoing work to protect agricultural operations in the East Valley.

This marks the sixth year farmers and community members will gather to deliver fresh, locally grown produce to the Sheriff’s Station in Thermal as a gesture of appreciation. Deputies will be able to take the produce home to enjoy with their families.

Their gratitude doesn’t stop there. Participants will also drop off toys for deputies to distribute to local families just in time for Christmas.

Farmers say the event is an important way to recognize the Sheriff’s Department’s efforts to combat agricultural theft — a growing problem in the region. Some farmers report losses exceeding $114,000 in stolen diesel fuel, irrigation parts, and copper wire.

Another farmer reported thieves stole 20,000 pounds of mangos along with 10,000 pounds of lemons and dates.

To address the rise in theft, the Sheriff’s Department has established a dedicated agricultural crime team consisting of four deputies and a sergeant.

The produce and toy drop-off will take place at 11:30 a.m. today in Thermal. Stay tuned for full coverage.
