Palm Canyon Theatre brings Annie back to the stage for the holidays

The Palm Canyon Theatre is bringing a beloved Broadway classic back to the Coachella Valley stage just in time for the holidays. Annie is now running through December 21, featuring local favorite Paul Grant as Daddy Warbucks and rising young star Carson Kemp sharing the title role with Sierra Petrillo.

For both performers, the show marks a special moment. Grant, known widely for his musical performances throughout the valley, is stepping into the iconic role of Oliver Warbucks for the first time. Kemp, meanwhile, has experience with the role after appearing in Annie Jr. earlier this year and is excited to take the stage once again.

The cast says audiences can expect a fresh, modern look at the timeless comic-strip characters, supported by unforgettable songs and a lot of heart. Kemp, who also plays piano and maintains a 4.0 GPA, says rehearsals have been full of music, dancing, and learning new skills—thanks in part to Palm Canyon Theatre’s youth training programs.

Shows run Thursday through Sunday, with one special adjustment this week: instead of Saturday’s performance, the cast will be appearing in the local Festival of Lights Parade, riding on a float so fans can spot them downtown. Annie performances continue through December 21.

Palm Canyon Theatre will also present “Mary and Bright,” a one-night holiday concert on Wednesday, December 17. The benefit event supports the LGBTQ Community Food Bank and features top local singers, including Francesca Mari and director C. Lane, plus several cast members from Annie. Guests are encouraged to bring a toy or non-perishable food donation.

Looking ahead, the theatre has a full season planned, including I Do! I Do!, Hair, Sunset Boulevard, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and a summer production of The Wizard of Oz—where Kemp hopes to return to the stage and compete for her dream role of Dorothy.
