Firebirds sweep back-to-back weekend series in Abbotsford

The Coachella Valley Firebirds went north of the border for the weekend and grabbed all four points over the Abbotsford Canucks. Nikke Kokko and Victor Ostman split the weekend, both grabbing wins. Sunday afternoon began with a scoreless first period before Abbotsford found the back of the net first, but that would be the last time in the game.

Down 1-0 and on the penalty kill following a tripping call on Jagger Firkus, Jacob Melanson stole the puck at the blue line and started a 2-on-1 rush. Melanson fed J.R. Avon to tie the game. The goal was Avon's sixth of the season and the Firebirds' third shorthanded goal.

Late in the third period, John Hayden forced his way into the zone. Jacob Melanson moved the puck to Ben Meyers at the top of the circle, who fired a shot past Canucks' goaltender Aku Koskenvuo.

The Firebirds are now 12-6-3-0 on the season.

MILESTONE: On Sunday, forward John Hayden became the Firebirds all-time leader in games played at 172.
