Local Restaurant and Mental Health Experts Promote Safer Holiday Drinking in the Coachella Valley

Holiday gatherings often bring plenty of cheer across the Coachella Valley, but this season’s celebrations can also lead to an increase in alcohol consumption, even among those who rarely drink. That’s why local restaurants and mental health experts are taking steps to encourage moderation.

Mitch’s on El Paseo in Palm Desert has been serving handcrafted cocktails and fine wines for more than a decade. Owner Mitch says December always brings a major boost in business as customers raise a glass to the season. But with that comes a responsibility to look out for guests.

The restaurant uses a “stoplight” approach to monitor alcohol service. Green means everything is fine, yellow signals caution, and red means it’s time to stop serving. Mitch says his team uses continuous training and communication to ensure guests can celebrate safely while still enjoying their night out.

Mental health experts say this kind of support is especially important during the holidays. Melissa Hawkins with the Betty Ford Center notes that while the season can be joyful, it can also heighten stress, anxiety, or feelings of depression, which may lead some to drink more.

She encourages anyone who feels concerned about their alcohol use to reach out for help, reminding the community that support is always available and that no one struggles alone.

As the celebrations continue, restaurants like Mitch’s are committed to promoting responsible enjoyment well beyond the holiday season.
