CAL FIRE Issues Holiday Warning: Christmas Tree Fires Can Ignite in Seconds
CAL FIRE is reminding families to stay alert this holiday season, as Christmas tree fires can turn festive moments into dangerous home emergencies in seconds. Fire officials say the most common causes include faulty decorative lights and trees placed too close to heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators and heating vents.
Over the past five years, dozens of home fires across California have been linked to Christmas trees catching fire. Many of these incidents began in living rooms, where trees are typically displayed. CAL FIRE reports that a high percentage of those fires were caused by electrical issues, including damaged bulbs and light strands.
To help prevent holiday disasters, officials encourage choosing a fresh tree with green, sturdy needles, and keeping it well watered throughout the season. They also advise maintaining a safe distance between the tree and any heat-producing appliances or vents. Only lights designed for indoor tree use should be installed — no frayed wires, cracked bulbs or outdated strands.
Before going to bed each night or leaving the house, CAL FIRE reminds everyone to switch off decorative lighting to reduce risk while no one is awake to respond.
A few simple steps, they say, can help ensure your home stays safe — and the holiday spirit stays bright.
