CAL FIRE Warns of Christmas Tree Fire Dangers This Holiday Season
As families deck the halls for the holidays, CAL FIRE in Riverside County is reminding residents that Christmas tree fires can turn festive moments into dangerous emergencies.
Officials say the most common causes of Christmas tree fires include faulty holiday lights and heat sources placed too close to trees, such as fireplaces, radiators, or heating vents. Once a dry tree ignites, flames can spread rapidly to presents, curtains, and the rest of the home.
According to CAL FIRE, between 2020 and 2024, more than 143 fires in Riverside County started with Christmas trees inside homes.
CAL FIRE reports:
20% of Christmas tree fires were caused by bulbs or holiday lights
40% of fires started in the living room, where most trees are typically placed
To reduce the risk, officials recommend choosing a fresh tree with green needles, keeping it well watered, and positioning it far from any heat source. Residents should only use tree-approved lights in good condition, avoiding frayed wires or cracked bulbs.
CAL FIRE also stresses the importance of turning off all decorative lights before going to bed or leaving home, helping ensure the holiday season stays safe and memorable for the right reasons.
