Massive Warehouse Proposal in Palm Springs Sparks Environmental Warnings

A massive warehouse development proposed for tribal land in north Palm Springs is facing growing criticism from conservation advocates and residents who say the project could cause long-term environmental harm. The project — called the Desert Mountain View Business Park

The development, proposed by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, would span more than 200 acres and include four industrial warehouse buildings totaling over 2 million square feet, including up to 700,000 square feet of cold-storage space. The site sits between Interstate 10 and Highway 111, a highly visible corridor marking the northern gateway into Palm Springs.

The Tribe says the project would create new revenue streams and support tribal self-governance. But local conservation groups warn the benefits may come with significant environmental costs. In a statement, one group called the proposal “a project of unprecedented scale in this area,” urging the public to consider how such development would affect traffic, air quality, and water resources.

To evaluate impacts, the Tribe prepared a Tribal Environmental Impact Statement (TEIS). According to the document, issues such as aesthetics and noise were not considered significant. However, air-quality impacts — especially those linked to truck traffic and industrial operations — may remain significant even with proposed mitigation measures.

Public engagement has become a point of contention. Although the Tribe issued a Notice of Availability and held a December 1 public meeting, Palm Springs Mayor Ron deHarte criticized the city’s handling of outreach, saying the city should have done a better job informing residents. Later, she clarified that the Tribe had met all required posting and notification protocols, while calling on the city to improve promotion of such events moving forward.

The City Council’s agenda for Wednesday still lists an administrative analysis of the warehouse project, though Mayor Hart has requested it be removed.
