U.S. Continues Aid to Colombia Despite Trump’s Promise to Cut Payments

More than two weeks after President Donald Trump vowed to halt all U.S. payments to Colombia, assistance to the country has not been interrupted. The administration continues to balance national security priorities with rising tensions between Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

U.S. officials say decades of partnership with Colombia remain critical in the fight against drug trafficking. They point to strong ties with the country’s institutions while singling out Petro as the main obstacle to progress on counternarcotics strategy. A review of U.S. assistance is underway at the State Department but has not led to major program changes.

A high-level meeting scheduled to assess all funding to Colombia was canceled and has not been rescheduled. In the meantime, sanctions against Petro have been put into place, and Colombia has been decertified as a partner in combating drug trafficking. Officials stress that these actions target the president and his administration, not the country’s defense and justice systems.

Washington views intelligence sharing and security coordination with Colombia as essential. Experts warn that cutting funding could severely damage the country’s ability to stop drug flows and leave the U.S. with limited visibility into trafficking routes in the Caribbean.

The administration says reductions to security assistance are moving forward while funding for the coming fiscal year remains under review. Officials also acknowledge that Colombia’s political landscape may soon shift, as Petro is constitutionally limited to one term, ending in 2026.

Relations between the two nations have grown strained as Petro escalates rhetoric toward Washington. Even so, U.S. leaders maintain that longstanding cooperation with Colombia’s core institutions will remain firm despite disputes at the presidential level.
