Woman Taken Into ICE Custody During Routine Green Card Interview, Family Demands Answers
A family in the San Diego area is waiting for answers tonight after a Ukrainian woman was taken into ICE custody during what was expected to be a routine green card interview.
Victor Korol says his wife, Victoria, has no criminal record and has followed all immigration rules throughout her stay in the United States. He describes her as his support system, especially during his battle with cancer and chemotherapy.
This week, the couple attended Viktoriia's scheduled green card interview, believing it would be another step forward in the process. Instead, Karol says his wife was detained by immigration officials without explanation.
Their attorney, Caroline Matthews, says Viktoriia was taken into custody without clear notice of charges, warrants, or documentation explaining why she was detained. Matthews adds that Viktoriia does not appear in the online immigration system where detainees are typically listed, making it difficult to determine her location or legal status.
Immigration advocates warn that similar incidents are becoming more common, with individuals being detained during routine immigration appointments despite having no criminal history or prior immigration violations.
Korol says he has not been able to communicate with his wife and does not know exactly where she is being held. He and her legal team say they will continue fighting to reunite the couple and complete the green card process.
Viktoriia is expected to be transferred to a regional detention facility as she awaits a court hearing.
