America’s Job Market Is Becoming Like an “Exclusive Airport Lounge,” Study Warns

A wave of new data shows that while job openings hit a five-month high in October, hiring remains sluggish — and many Americans are being locked out of work altogether. According to federal labor statistics, voluntary quits have dropped to their lowest rate in five years, a sign that workers no longer feel confident enough to seek new opportunities.

Economists describe the market as becoming an “exclusive club”: those already employed or with in-demand skills continue to do reasonably well, but for those on the outside, breaking into stable, well-paid work has become increasingly difficult.

October saw an uptick in job postings — largely driven by retailers hiring for the holiday season — but most industries added few new workers. The rate of actual hires dropped to levels unseen in over a decade.

At the same time, layoffs have risen, reaching their highest rate since early 2023. And because fewer people are quitting voluntarily, employers are filling very few vacancies. That trend matters because job mobility — the ability to leave and find better work — is a key indicator of a healthy labor market.

For younger workers, lower-income households, and anyone trying to break into stable employment, the slowed job market is already hitting hard. Experts warn that if the pattern continues, growing inequality and economic stagnation could follow.

As the economy heads into the holidays and 2026, many are left wondering whether the job market will open up again — or if it’s become a closed door for those who need opportunity most.
