Body-cam video shows police confront Luigi Mangione at Altoona McDonald’s one year after arrest
Newly released police body-camera video captures the moment Altoona Police confronted 27-year-old Luigi Mangione inside a McDonald’s restaurant one year ago today. Officers approached Mangione on December 9, 2024, after a citizen reported seeing someone who matched the description of the suspect wanted in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Thompson, 50, was shot from behind on a Manhattan sidewalk just five days earlier. The killing launched a widespread manhunt as authorities searched across multiple states for the person responsible.
In the arrest video, officers are seen questioning Mangione and asking for his identification. Police say he initially used a false name. After detaining him, officers searched a backpack he was carrying and recovered a handgun, a silencer, ammunition, and notes that prosecutors argue are linked to the crime.
Mangione is currently facing multiple state charges, including second-degree murder, and a separate federal prosecution that could lead to the death penalty. He has pleaded not guilty in both cases.
His legal team is fighting to keep some of the evidence out of court, claiming items were seized illegally and that police questioned him before issuing a proper Miranda warning.
Court hearings continue as both sides prepare for trials that are expected to draw national attention.
