Palm Desert Students Meet City Leaders and First Responders at “Cocoa With the Mayor” Event
At James Earl Carter Elementary School today, students had the unique opportunity to meet city leaders and first responders during a special “Cocoa With the Mayor” event. Young learners gathered for hot cocoa, conversation, and encouragement to get involved in their community.
Mayor Jan Barnett joined students for the event, greeting them warmly and explaining the importance of civic engagement. She told the children the goal was to help them understand how their city works and to feel connected as future members of the community.
Alongside the mayor, deputies from the sheriff’s office and local firefighters spoke to the students about their roles and how they serve and protect the community. The event also included the charity Read With Me, which distributed free books to every attending student — reinforcing a passion for reading.
Students excitedly shared that meeting their city leaders inspired them. As one youngster put it, the experience “makes me want to read more.” Organizers said this was only the beginning: they hope that by engaging youth early, more students will read, stay involved, and contribute positively to the community as they grow up.
Events like this highlight the importance of civic outreach and youth engagement — planting seeds for responsible, community-minded adults in Palm Desert.
