Senate Set for Vote on GOP Health Care Bill as ACA Tax Credits Near Expiration

Senate Set for Vote on GOP Health Care Bill as ACA Tax Credits Near Expiration

Congress is racing against a year-end deadline as enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits are set to expire at the end of December, threatening major premium increases for millions of Americans if action isn’t taken. Senate Majority Leader John Thune announced that lawmakers will vote Thursday on a Republican-led proposal that expands the use of health savings accounts but does not extend the ACA subsidies.

The bill, authored by Senator Mike Crapo and Senator Bill Cassidy, aims to shift more purchasing power to consumers instead of insurers. It includes restrictions preventing funds from being used for abortions or gender-affirming care. Republican leaders argue their plan will reduce costs and keep federal spending in check.

But Democrats have already dismissed the bill as a nonstarter, saying it fails to address the issue at the center of the looming premium spike. They plan to bring their own bill extending the credits for three more years, though neither proposal is expected to meet the 60-vote threshold needed to advance in the Senate.

With both sides entrenched, the prospect of subsidies expiring is becoming increasingly likely. Democratic leaders say Republicans will bear responsibility if premiums rise in the new year, while GOP lawmakers accuse Democrats of staging a political show vote without seeking compromise.
