Study: Nearly One-Third of U.S. Teens Use AI Chatbots Daily
A new study from the Pew Research Center shows widespread adoption of artificial intelligence chatbots among American teens, with nearly one-third reporting daily use. The research highlights the rapid integration of AI into young people’s lives — and ongoing concerns about mental health and exposure to inappropriate content.
According to the survey of nearly 1,500 teens ages 13 to 17, close to 70% have used an AI chatbot at least once. Sixteen percent say they use them several times a day or almost constantly. ChatGPT remains the most popular platform, followed by Google’s Gemini, Meta AI, Microsoft Copilot, Character.AI and Anthropic’s Claude.
Experts say chatbots can support learning and homework, but worry that some teens are using them for emotional companionship or simulated romantic interactions. Several AI companies have recently faced lawsuits from families alleging the technology contributed to teens’ mental health struggles.
In response, companies like OpenAI and Meta have expanded parental controls and restrictions designed to prevent inappropriate conversations with minors. Safety advocates, meanwhile, continue to warn families to be cautious, especially with chatbots that mimic human relationships.
As AI tools continue making their way into classrooms, educators and tech leaders are working to balance innovation with protections to ensure teen users stay safe online.
