Federal Judge Orders End to Trump Administration's Control of California National Guard in Los Angeles

A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration must end its deployment of California National Guard troops in Los Angeles and return control to Governor Gavin Newsom, finding the federal government maintained the presence illegally after emergency conditions concluded.
The ruling determined that the administration kept the troops in Los Angeles unlawfully following the end of what were designated as "emergency conditions" this summer. The Trump administration is expected to appeal the decision.
President Trump initially federalized several thousand Guard troops in Los Angeles in June, asserting they were necessary to protect federal property and personnel during demonstrations over immigration enforcement raids. At the time of the ruling, the administration had been reducing the federalized force to approximately 100 troops.
Governor Newsom filed suit against the federal deployment in June, challenging the administration's authority to maintain control of state National Guard units. The governor submitted a new request for an injunction last month, leading to this week's court decision.
The case centers on the limits of federal authority over state National Guard forces and the duration of emergency deployments without state consent.
