Palm Desert Baby Becomes First in California to Receive New Pediatric Cochlear Implant
A historic medical breakthrough is making headlines tonight. A 1-year-old baby from Palm Desert has become the first pediatric patient in California to receive the next-generation NEXA cochlear implant. The surgery was performed at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego by Dr. Daniela Carvalho, one of Southern California’s leading ear, nose, and throat surgeons.
The baby, Uriah, did not pass his newborn hearing exam, and what doctors initially suspected was fluid buildup turned out to be profound hearing loss in one ear and severe hearing loss in the other. After evaluating treatment options, Uriah underwent the groundbreaking cochlear implant surgery at just 9 months old.
Since the procedure, his mother says he has already begun responding to new sounds, turning his head with curiosity, and interacting more deeply with the world around him. For the family, Uriah’s restored ability to hear is the greatest gift of the holiday season.
