Turning Point USA Chapter Rechartered at College of the Desert, Prompting Campus Debate
A student organization at College of the Desert is officially returning to campus after months of debate and multiple failed votes.
Turning Point USA—originally founded by the late Charlie Kirk—has expanded rapidly nationwide since Kirk’s assassination. That growth has included the launch of new chapters across the country, including now at COD, where the decision has sparked strong reactions from students.
According to students who attended the most recent Associated Students meeting, the Student Senate initially voted twice in November to deny the chapter’s recharter request.
However, district bylaws require a club to be approved if it meets specific criteria:
- at least ten student members,
- a faculty advisor,
- two Inter-Club Council representatives, and
- compliance with all COD policies.
Because Turning Point USA met those requirements, the decision was elevated to the Office of Student Life after the Senate rejected it. The club was officially approved last week.
Some students say they are uneasy about the group returning to campus. They point to reports of violence, harassment, or disruptions associated with certain TPUSA chapters at other colleges.
Other students say that—whether or not they agree with the club’s ideology—any group that follows COD’s rules should be allowed to operate.
The rechartered Turning Point USA chapter is expected to begin hosting meetings and campus activities in the coming weeks.
