Coachella Valley School District Addresses Mold Discovery at Thermal School

The Coachella Valley Unified School District has confirmed mold contamination in two classrooms at John Kelley Elementary School, prompting immediate student relocation and a full remediation effort.

District officials disclosed the positive mold findings on Thursday, following independent testing conducted by Safeguard EnviroGroup, a certified environmental testing firm. Students and staff were relocated to alternative instructional spaces as soon as mold was initially reported, allowing classes to continue without disruption.

Safeguard EnviroGroup completed a comprehensive evaluation identifying the extent of contamination and outlining recommended remediation steps. The district has not disclosed how long the mold may have been present before its discovery.

Based on the testing firm's report, CVUSD contracted SERVPRO, a licensed environmental remediation company, to clean and restore the affected classrooms. The remediation will follow the scope of work outlined in Safeguard EnviroGroup's assessment to meet required safety and quality standards.

The district plans to make SERVPRO's final remediation report available to the public once work is completed. A post-remediation verification by an independent party will be conducted before students and staff return to the two classrooms.
