Grand Opening of Indio Music Venue Overshadowed by Dispute Between Former Business Partners

Tonight marks the grand opening of The Dune Room, a new music-based business in downtown Indio. But the celebration comes just days after a social media post from two of the original partners who say they were forced out of the project before it ever opened its doors.

The business was originally announced under a different name—The Desert Rat—and was formed by three partners: Ron Mesh, Jayce Levi, and his wife, Ashley. According to the Levi’s, they received the keys to the building in September with plans to build a community-focused music venue.

However, just weeks later, they say they were told Mesh would be going his own way. Because Mesh’s name was the only one listed on the lease, Jayce and Ashley claim they had no legal standing to remain involved.

The couple says the news came as a shock. For Jayce Levi, a longtime instrument repair shop owner in Indio, the situation was especially emotional. He says his goal was never about profit, but about creating a space that brought local musicians and the community together.

The City of Indio was asked about its involvement in the project. In a statement, the city said, in part, that any remaining disputes between former business partners fall outside its jurisdiction. Ashley Levi, however, says it was guidance from the city that made them feel comfortable placing Mesh’s name alone on the lease.

Attempts to speak with Ron Mesh during the installation of The Dune Room’s sign were unsuccessful, as he declined to go on camera. Through a letter from his attorney, Mesh alleges the Levi’s harassed him, owe him more than $30,000, and were responsible for gross mismanagement of the business. Jayce and Ashley Levi say they never received that letter and deny the accusations.

As The Dune Room opens its doors to the public, the Levi’s say they are still trying to understand how a dream rooted in music and community fell apart before it ever had a chance to begin.
