Palm Desert Considers Rescinding LGBTQ Pride Recognition Following City Council Discussion
The city of Palm Desert may soon reconsider policies that formally recognize LGBTQ Pride Month, following a request made by Mayor Pro Tem Joe Pradeto during a recent city council meeting.
The discussion comes after the city displayed a banner last November in support of the LGBTQ community and Palm Springs Pride. During Thursday night’s meeting, three council members signaled support for revisiting the current resolution, saying the city should reconsider how it acknowledges specific groups.
Mayor Pro Tem Pradeto says his request is rooted in the belief that local government should avoid involvement in what he describes as residents’ private lives. He emphasized that focusing on differences can create division, while focusing on similarities can promote unity. According to Pradeto, some residents have expressed concerns that recognizing one group could be seen as favoring certain communities over others.
The proposal has drawn mixed reactions from residents. Some community members say public support for the LGBTQ community is important, particularly given the discrimination many have faced over the years. Others agree with the mayor pro tem’s view that the city should treat all residents equally without singling out specific groups.
City officials say no immediate action will be taken. Before any policy change moves forward, a study session would be scheduled, allowing all council members to weigh in and giving the public an opportunity to share feedback.
Pradeto acknowledges the proposal could upset some residents but says his goal is to foster inclusion and bring the community together. The item could be placed on a future city council agenda as early as January.
