The third installment in James Cameron's sci-fi franchise, "Avatar: Fire and Ash," arrives in theaters this week, introducing audiences to the "Ash People" tribe of Pandora—16 years after the original film's debut.

The first "Avatar" opened in December 2009 with $77 million domestically and went on to become the top-grossing film worldwide at over $2.9 billion. Its 2022 sequel, "The Way of Water," earned more than $2.3 billion globally.

Industry projections suggest "Fire and Ash" could open between $100 million and $165 million in North America.
