Firefighters Urge Desert Hikers to Take Safety Precautions After Recent Trail Death
Winter brings peak hiking season to the Coachella Valley, attracting many outdoor enthusiasts to popular trails like the Bump and Grind Trail. But following a recent death on the trails, firefighters are warning hikers to take safety seriously.
One hiker shared her firsthand experience after being bitten by a snake. “I guess I startled the snake and he just came up and bit me and went right back down. The paramedics came and got me off the hill,” she said. Since then, she now carries a whistle and other safety items every time she hikes.
First responders advise proper preparation before heading outdoors. CAL FIRE Riverside County Fire Battalion Chief Pete Kearney said hikers should start early when it’s cooler, carry a charged cell phone, bring plenty of water, and wear proper clothing and footwear.
“Adding the better prepared you are, the safer and more enjoyable your hike will be,” Chief Kearney said. He emphasized that knowing your limitations and being aware of trail hazards, including heat and wildlife, can save lives.
