New Libido Treatment For Post Menopausal Women

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug that could help millions of postmenopausal women regain their sex drive.

The drug, called Addyi, is made by Sprout Pharmaceuticals. The company’s founder says the FDA’s decision represents a major shift in how women’s sexual health is understood and treated.

Addyi is designed to treat a condition known as hypoactive sexual desire disorder, or HSDD, in women under the age of 65. Women with the condition experience a persistently low sexual desire that can cause distress.

The FDA first approved Addyi in 2015 for use in premenopausal women. Now, the approval has been expanded to include postmenopausal women, giving a new group access to a treatment option that was previously unavailable to them.

Six years after the original U.S. approval, Health Canada also approved Addyi for expanded use in postmenopausal women. Supporters of the drug say the latest FDA decision marks an important step forward in addressing women’s sexual health needs.
