Palm Desert City Council to Hold Emergency Meeting on Proposal to End Pride Month Recognition
The Palm Desert City Council will convene in a special meeting on Tuesday afternoon to consider a proposal that would eliminate the city's recognition of Pride Month and remove related displays from City Hall.
The special session, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Council Chamber (73-510 Fred Waring Drive), comes after Mayor Pro Tem Joe Pradetto introduced the measure during a council meeting last Thursday.
The proposal specifically calls for rescinding Resolution No. 2024-038, which established LGBTQ Pride Month commemorations, and amending Resolution No. 2018-09, the city's Diversity and Inclusion resolution. It would also end the display of Pride banners at City Hall.
Community Response
The proposal has generated significant reaction from residents and officials across the region. California Assemblyman Greg Wallace released a statement over the weekend urging the council to reject the measure, saying, "I urge the Palm Desert City Council to stand on the right side of history and vote down this divisive proposal."
Two advocacy groups, Courageous Resistance and Indivisible of the Desert, are organizing community members to attend the meeting and speak against the proposal. "Our visibility is non-negotiable," the groups stated in a call to action.
Many residents have expressed concern that removing Pride symbols would conflict with the Coachella Valley's reputation for inclusivity and could alienate LGBTQ+ residents and visitors. Some have pointed to neighboring Palm Springs as an example of a community celebrated for its openness.
However, the proposal has also drawn support from residents who argue that government buildings should remain neutral spaces and display only official government flags to avoid political or social division.
Pradetto's Position
Pradetto has defended his proposal, stating his goal is to reduce divisiveness in the community. "My strategy is to make sure City Hall remains a neutral place so that we don't elevate one speech over another," he said in a recent interview. "Focusing on our differences is going to get us division."
Our NBC Palm Springs Reporter Brett Rosen will be out at that meeting this afternoon. He will have the very latest right here on nbcpalmsprings.com as well as during our 5 and 6 p.m. broadcasts.
