Sacramento's Hanukkah Menorah Lighting Takes on Deeper Meaning After Australia Terror Attack
Sacramento's Jewish community gathered for their annual Hanukkah menorah lighting Monday night, but this year's celebration carried particular significance in the wake of Sunday's deadly terror attack at a Hanukkah event in Sydney, Australia.
Rabbi Mendy Cohen of Chabad of Sacramento, who led the ceremony, has a personal connection to the tragedy—one of his mentors hosted the Australian event, and a family friend was among the 15 victims killed.
Despite the fear rippling through Jewish communities worldwide, attendees emphasized their determination to continue celebrating openly. The rabbi framed the gathering as an act of resilience against darkness.
Watch the full report above to hear from community members on why they refused to let fear keep them away, and the powerful message behind this year's ceremony.
