Flu Cases Surge as New Variant Spreads Across U.S.
Respiratory illnesses are ramping up nationwide, fueled by a new influenza virus variant driving most infections this season. Three influenza viruses are currently circulating, with subclade K leading the wave.
The U.S. is likely headed for a severe flu season, according to Andrew Pekosz with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Some states are already reporting high virus levels, and experts expect every state to see elevated case numbers within the next two to three months.
"We're seeing a lot of influenza cases increasing across the country, and that's a trend that we're sure will continue into the new year," Pekosz said.
Meanwhile, COVID-19 and RSV cases remain low compared to previous years, though COVID sometimes sees a mid-winter uptick.
Health officials say vaccination remains the best protection against severe disease. The current flu vaccine matches two circulating strains well, though the new variant may partially evade some vaccine-induced immunity.
