"Portrait of a Graduate" shapes PSUSD’s vision for future-ready students
Palm Springs Unified School District has launched a new initiative this school year aimed at better preparing students for the demands of college, careers and life after graduation.
The initiative, called “Portrait of a Graduate,” establishes a districtwide framework outlining the skills students should develop from transitional kindergarten through 12th grade. District officials say the program reflects a growing national movement to ensure students leave school ready to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing world.
“This is our district's commitment to ensuring that every single student in our district is college, career and life ready,” said Karen Dimick, Ed.D., PSUSD’s Director of College and Career Readiness, who is leading the effort.
The framework was shaped by district leaders, teachers, students and community partners. Together, they identified four core competencies that students should strengthen throughout their education: communication, collaboration, problem-solving and work ethic.
“It really is a framework for the future. It is our district's commitment to excellence,” Dimick said.
To introduce the initiative, the district produced a video featuring several PSUSD high school seniors who spoke about how the skills show up in their academic and personal lives.
“When I see a problem, I do not see it as an obstacle. I see it more as an opportunity to grow and challenge myself,” said senior Jaciel Aleman.
Senior Olivia Aparicio said that joining PSUSD helped her recognize the importance of communication. “Transitioning into the PSUSD district really showed me the opportunities that I can achieve when strengthening my communication skills,” she said.
For senior Joel Campos-Lopez, the framework aligns with experiences that have helped him develop leadership skills. “I’ve grown to become a leader, and I can delegate tasks and communicate efficiently to teams so that we can all collaborate better,” he said.
District officials say the goal is for every staff member, from teachers and counselors to custodians, to play a role in reinforcing the competencies students need beyond the classroom.
“All together, we are reinforcing what excellent outcomes look like through the work of the Portrait of a Graduate,” Dimick said.
By emphasizing real-world skills, Palm Springs Unified aims to equip students not just for graduation, but for success in an increasingly complex world.
